I have to admit that I am now trying to photograph wedding with just an one light only. I used to carry portable studio lighting kits (Elinchrom Ranger) with me along with an assistant all the time. Since I recently moved to San Antonio, I don’t have any assistant and I have to shoot without any help. I now also use more zoom lenses (Canon 17-40 and 70-200 2.8 is) than prime lenses (Canon 35 1.4L and 85 1.2L). In this wedding, I actually was a second photographer for Emma (Pal Photo Art). First image, I used two nikon sb-26s triggered by pocket wizard. Yes, two strobes but it they are considered to be one light source. Both full power (1/1) on camera right. My camera body was 1D Mark III and shot at 1/400 @ F14. Also used 1/2 CTO to really saturate the background color. Speaking about the background, RedBerry Mansion was one of the most beautiful venue I’ve ever seen. Lake & pool in the background was really cool. Slow recycle time since I was using speedlites but groom and groomsmen didn’t mind after I showed them this image.
I noticed the unique entry door of this venue when I first walked in. I decided to backlight the bride and broom to create some dramatic look. I used canon 580 EXII with pocket wizard mini and flex tt5 to quickly pull this image. I didn’t have to think about any of the exposure of the strobe. The new pocket wizard is pretty good at figuring out right amount of flash output. The only thing I have to think about is the; aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Sounds complicated but it’s very easy. Shot with Canon 5D Mark II
